Gage Park Baptist is an
American Baptist Church and started as a mission of First
Baptist Church of Topeka. Gage Park Baptist began with a few
committed people meeting in the home of James and Jean Crider in
1949.
Pastor Lloyd Griffith was called as the first pastor and the
first public services were held on September 4, 1949, in the old
Coed Theater on Lane Street. This was later
the the home for Latta-Whitlow Plumbing;
it was torn down when the renovations of College
Hill began in the summer of 2006.
The sanctuary unit ground-breaking was held February 26, 1950.
Much of the work on the building was done by the members and
friends of the church.
On September 13, 1964, ground-breaking for the educational unit
was held concluding the physical building of the church. Over
the years, the members have taken excellent care of the building
as you can see today.
In January of 1993, the congregation adopted a purpose statement
that stands today "To bring glory to God in our community and
the world through a relationship with and a commitment to Jesus
Christ as Savior and Lord." It is with this purpose in mind that
we administer the programs and services listed on this web site.
Our Music Director of 20 years,
Jill Roesler, retired in May of 2008. We
cannot begin to describe her talent that seemed to
come effortlessly. Children's programs have
continued to be a priority for Gage Park Baptist
Church. The music programs have continued using
other talented Church members. Vacation bible school
continues to be a neighborhood event, changing from
a week day schedule, to it's current evening event,
matching the needs of families. It has grown to the
point that we now have over 50 children attending
nightly, and we are able to welcome anyone who
wishes to attend.
Robert Roesler, our pastor of 30 years (his start
date was 10/15/80) retired on December 31, 2010
ending an era. Congratulations! We wish
you many prosperous years of retirement! Our
interim Pastor is Gordon Rhodes. Pastor
Rhodes, we welcome
you to our church family!
We
now start a new era. One where our church
congregation will pull together and stand united.
It promises to be a challenging and highly rewarding
endeavor! Won't you join us?
Do not hesitate
to call the church office if you should have any
questions. Thank you for visiting with us and may God bless you
in your quest to find a church home.
